One of the most common questions we get at Cutts & Pieces is: "Which colour should I choose?"
It's a good question — the same design in gold and matt black can feel like completely different pieces. Here's how to think about it.
Why Finish Matters More Than You Think
With canvas prints, the colour is baked into the design. With laser-cut metal wall art, the finish is everything. The same laser-cut pattern — say, a mandala or a bird silhouette — becomes a completely different object depending on the powder-coat finish you choose.
Gold reads as luxurious and warm. Matt black reads as modern and architectural. White reads as gallery-clean and sculptural. The design is the same; the finish changes its entire personality.
The Eight Finishes, Explained
Gold
Rich, warm, and unmistakably premium. Gold works best in rooms with warm neutral tones — creams, taupes, terracottas. It suits Islamic calligraphy particularly well. Avoid pairing gold with cool-toned interiors.
Silver
The contemporary choice. Silver is clean, light-reflective, and pairs naturally with modern and minimalist interiors. Works especially well with grey and cool-white walls.
Gloss Black
Maximum visual impact. High contrast, sharp, and commanding. Best against white or light-coloured walls. Perfect for large statement pieces.
Matt Black
All the confidence of black without the shine. The designer's choice — understated, architectural, and works in almost any modern space. Our most popular finish.
White
When you want the shape of the design to speak, not the colour. White makes laser-cut forms read as pure sculpture. Works best on coloured or textured walls.
Off White
Softer than white, warmer in feel. Suits period properties and warm neutral interiors. Photographs beautifully.
Grey
The great neutral. Works with almost everything — neither warm nor cool, neither bold nor shy. If you're genuinely unsure, mid-tone grey is rarely wrong.
Bronze
Earthy, antique-adjacent, and deeply warm. Suits traditional interiors, Moroccan-influenced spaces, and rooms with natural materials — wood, rattan, stone.
